Currently, there are at least 74 national soil science societies in the world (ESDAC, 2016; IUSS, 2016), indicating that soil science followed the trend of organizing societies in various scientific fields.

In this paper light is shed on the development of national soil science societies from the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), which partly reflects the soil science history of these countries.
