SUMMARY:SUITMA13
DESCRIPTION:The Chairs of the SUITMA13, Francesca Bretzel, Grazia Masciandaro and Francesca Vannucchi, on behalf of the Research Institute on Terrestrial Ecosystems (IRET) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS) are keen to invite you to participate to the conference that will be held in Pisa, Italy, from the 6th to the 8th of October 2025, at the CNR Research Area. SUITMA is a\nThe Conference will focus on “SUITMAs in One Health Perspective”.\nSoil is a key component of the water and nutrient cycle and a major contributor to global carbon sequestration which provides habitat for almost all land plants, as well as a large proportion of terrestrial fauna. Yet despite its global importance, it is estimated that one third of global soil is degraded. In urban environments, soil has the potential to alleviate problems such as flash flooding and its vital role in supporting vegetation, which also contributes to the urban landscape by, for example, reducing the Urban Heat Island. Because of the changing nature of the city, soils undergo many disturbance actions: manipulation, compaction, and pollution for example. These degrade its important properties leading to loss of fertility and functions.\nTOPICS\n\nSUITMA as sink and source of pollutants – Keywords: geochemical cycles, urban food production.\nSUITMA to conserve and improve soil quality and biodiversity – Keywords: soil remediation, soil biology, bioindicators of soil quality and functionality, genomics.\nSUITMA improvers and ecosystem services – Keywords: waste materials for soil construction, compost, rubble, mine waste, Technosols.\nSUITMA challenges for the future – Keywords: pedology, Anthropocene, war contamination, emerging contaminants.\n\n
