Soil Mapping for Sustainable Land Use Planning

Soil Mapping for Sustainable Land Use Planning

3° joint workshop Of the IUSS working groups

Digital soil mapping & globalsoilmap

This international conference is a joint effort of two working groups of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS) commission “pedometrics”, namely the Digital Soil Mapping Working Group (DSM WG) and the GlobalSoilMap Working Group (GSM WG).

Digital Soil Mapping (DSM) is a process to generate spatial soil information integrating soil data with environmental information using (geo) statistical and machine learning approaches. The key issues of digital soil mapping include the adoption of new mapping tools and techniques, data management systems, innovative delivery of soil data, and methods to analyse, integrate, and visualize soil and environmental datasets. It has been further extended to Digital Soil Assessment that provide examples and methods for using the generated maps for various land management purposes. The DSM working group meets every two years once in different locations. Previous examples are 2016 – Aarhus (Denmark), 2014 – Nanjing (China), 2012 – Sydney (Australia), 2010 – Rome (Italy), 2008 Logan (Utah, USA), 2006 – Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), 2004 Montpellier (France).

The aims of the GlobalSoilMap working group (GSM WG) are i) To update the specifications of the GlobalSoilMap project for producing fine grids of soil properties, ii) To conduct research activities about the methodologies to predict soil properties, iii) To provide assistance and training, iv) To report progress to the IUSS.

The GlobalSoilMap working group had two dedicated conferences: Orléans (France) 2013 and Moscow (Russia) 2017. The first two joint workshops of the two working groups were organized in Santiago (Chile) and Orléans (France) in 2019 and 2023, respectively.
