By Xing Yan, Yongqiu Xia, Xu Zhao, Chaopu Ti, Longlong Xia, Scott X. Chang, Xiaoyuan Yan (2025). Coupling nitrogen removal and watershed management to improve global lake water quality. Nature Communications, 16: 2182. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-025-57442-0
Taking into consideration the N level (estimated by a remote sensing model) of 5768 lakes over the world, this paper demonstrates that is possible to reduce the N concentration (taken as proxy for pollution) in the water lakes through managing of fertilization in the watershed. To achieve the goal, it is also necessary to construct wastewater treatment plants and planting cover crops. However, the relationship between watershed N management and lake water quality improvement remains unclear, possibly because of factors like the large variation in N release from the land, the legacy of N flows, and the complex biogeochemical N cycles. Nonetheless, a 30% reduction in N loading in watersheds can improve cumulative water quality by over 70%, while stricter N reduction could accelerate achieving water quality goal (≤1 mg N/L).
By María Belén Ciacci, Norma Guadalupe Micheloud, Mauro Roberto Silvestre Levy, Marianela Rodriguez, Silvia Imhoff, Norberto Francisco Gariglio (2025). Cover crops improve the vegetative and reproductive traits of peach trees at the semiarid area of El Oasis Sur, Mendoza Province (Argentina). Journal of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, 25: 1723-1730. DOI:10.1007/s42729-025-02233-1
This paper demonstrates that, even in a semiarid environment, both continuous cover crop (alfalfa) or annual cover crop (common vetch+oat) do not produce adverse effects on the vegetative and reproductive dynamics of peach trees. Instead, the application of both cover crops exerted a beneficial influence on vegetative growth, fruit size, fruit firmness, the number of fruits per tree and overall fruit yield of peach.

News from the IUSS
2025 IUSS World Soil of the Year
The “Gleysol – Hydromorphic soil supporting forest growth in the steppe region from the Carpathian Basin”, has been officially named the World Soil of the Year 2025. This soil was proposed by the Hungarian Soil Science Society. It highlights the significance of these unique soils that have a large global coverage, occurring in nearly all climates.
The represented World Soil of the Year soil profile is located on Püspökladány Experimental Station and Arboretum University of Sopron Forest Research Institute (SOE-ERTI). The soil is part of a unique cultural landscape dominated by grasslands and salt effected pastures in the Hungarian Plain. It is located within the Hortobágy National Park, which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (Man and the Biosphere Program – MAB) and recognized UNESCO World heritage site.
Gleysols are soils that are affected in various areas in the world by land use and management and the indirect and direct effects of climate change. Salinization of groundwater, decreasing groundwater levels and alternation of sediment influx are common.
The election of the ‘Gleysol – hydromorphic soil from the steppe region in the Carpathian Basin’ as the World Soil of the Year 2025, comes amid growing global concerns about soil health and environmental change. Protecting and sustainably managing these hydromorphic soils is essential for mitigating floods, preserving water quality, and ensuring sustainable forest ecosystems in steppe terrains.
Various activities are planned throughout the year to celebrate this achievement, including educational programs, community workshops, and conservation initiatives aimed at promoting awareness of Gleysols’ ecological significance.

Molecular modeling in soil science – achievements and perspectives
Centre Européen de Calcul Atomique et Moléculaire (CECAM-AT)
Date: September 24th-26th, 2025
Location: BOKU University, Vienna, Austria
It is undeniable the major role of soils in ecosystem functions at very different spatial and temporal scales (local and global) from microscopic to macroscopic phenomena. In view of the great demand for information regarding best practices for soil use and management, as well as remediation, new methods traditionally used in other areas have come into play to provide a better understanding of important soil processes and functions. With the arrival of powerful and more efficient computers, molecular modeling has become an important tool, offering insights into scales unattainable experimentally, being able to simulate complex molecular systems. The application of such methods in soil science has proven success to understand the interactions within soil at microscopic level, key to determine the fate of pollutants.
This symposium represents an opportunity to bring together scientists of high prestige in different areas of molecular modeling applied to soil science to discuss the state-of-the-art, promote meaningful discussions and contrast in-depth points of view to determine future perspectives and challenges regarding molecular modeling applied to soil science. Furthermore, the symposium presents an opportunity to foster cooperation and dissemination of knowledge on methods for the simulation of representative soil models, according to today’s needs as well as the prediction of physicochemical properties.

SUITMA13 International Conference
Date: October 5th – 9th, 2025
Location: Pisa, Italy
The Research Institute on Terrestrial Ecosystems (IRET) of the National Research Council (CNR) on behalf of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS), is pleased to invite colleagues from all around the world to participate in the SUITMA (Soils of Urban, Industrial, Traffic, Mining and Military Areas) 13th international conference, which will be held in Pisa, Italy, from the 5 -9 October 2025, at the CNR (Italian National Research Council) in Pisa.
The conference will focus on “SUITMA from a One Health Perspective”. Soil is a key component of the water and nutrient cycle, and a major contributor to global carbon sequestration. Soil also provides habitats for nearly all land plants, as well as a large proportion of terrestrial fauna. Despite its global importance, it is estimated that one third of global soil is degraded. In anthropized areas, soils undergo many forms of disturbance: manipulation, compaction, and pollution which impact their quality. However, even degraded soils have the potential to alleviate environmental problems and play a vital role in supporting vegetation. Degraded soils of urban areas and other anthropogenic lands merit scientific and professional attention in order to enhance their ecosystem services and to support nature- based solutions, to tackle the urgent challenges of climate change, and for the health of all organisms and ecosystems.
Topics:
• SUITMA as sink and source of pollutants – Keywords: geochemical cycles, urban food production.
• SUITMA to conserve and improve soil quality and biodiversity – Keywords: soil remediation, soil biology, bioindicators of soil quality and functionality, genomics.
• SUITMA improvers and ecosystem services – Keywords: waste materials for soil construction, compost, rubble, mine waste, Technosols.
• SUITMA challenges for the future – Keywords: pedology, Anthropocene, war contamination, emerging contaminants.
Deadlines:

Grounding Carbon Farming course
Date: 13th – 19th September 2025
Location: Dampierre-en-Bray, Normandy, France

Organised by: WIMEK graduate school in collaboration with Soil biology and Environmental policy groups (Wageningen University).
Duration: 5 full days during a week on site on a farm in Normandy, France. Arrival night of the 13th, departure in the morning on the 19th.
As the climate changes, the environment degrades, biodiversity declines and the world population increases, agricultural ecosystems are increasingly looked at, both as culprit and saviours. Agroecosystems and their soils are indeed key to support a multitude of ecosystem services, but their degradation worldwide jeopardises this ability.
Carbon farming is proposed as a solution. One approach – soil carbon sequestration – to solve the climate crisis and revert environmental degradation caused by agriculture while feeding a growing world population.

EU Soil Law, (provisional) Agreement between the European Parliament and the Council
The European Soil Monitoring Law takes a step forward. The Council of the Union, which brings together representatives of the Member States, has reached a provisional agreement with representatives of the EU Parliament. This is a shared text of the directive which, in the objectives of the Commission that proposed it, will have to help achieve the goal of restoring continental soils to health by 2050.
The directive will have the task of establishing a framework for soil monitoring, capable of improving resilience and managing the risks of contaminated sites. It will also define the principles of mitigation of soil consumption, with particular attention to sealing and soil removal.
Poland holds the rotating presidency of the Council and Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Polish Minister for Climate and Environment said: “With the agreement reached, we have established the first ever EU framework for soil assessment and monitoring across Europe. It is time to act, as more than 60% of Europe’s soils are unhealthy and their condition is deteriorating. Healthy and resilient soil is crucial to ensuring healthy and nutritious food and cleaner water for future generations.” The agreement also pleases the EU Commission which says: “This is an important step to address the urgent challenges related to soil health that impact all European countries, the resilience of our food chain and the economy in general. The new law will also help strengthen soil resilience to natural disasters, heatwaves and extreme weather events, as well as other critical environmental challenges, such as erosion, contamination and biodiversity loss.”

The State of Food and Agriculture 2024
Value-driven transformation of agrifood systems

By FAO, Ed. FAO, 2024
Uncovering the true cost of food is the first step in making agrifood systems more inclusive, resilient and sustainable. As The State of Food and Agriculture 2023 revealed, agrifood systems activities generate significant benefits for society, but also have negative impacts on economic, social and environmental sustainability. The quantified hidden costs of agrifood systems amount to around 10 percent of global gross domestic product. Therefore, strategic action is necessary, and all agrifood systems actors ‒ from producers and agribusinesses to consumers and governments ‒ have a crucial role to play. While transforming agrifood systems would yield a net global gain, the benefits and costs would be unevenly distributed among stakeholders and countries over time. The State of Food and Agriculture 2024 builds on the findings of the 2023 edition, delving deeper into the use of true cost accounting assessments of agrifood systems and identifying policy interventions aimed at transformation. Using updated global datasets, the report confirms previous estimates of the quantified hidden costs of agrifood systems and provides a detailed breakdown of the hidden costs associated with unhealthy dietary patterns and non-communicable diseases for 156 countries. These findings are analysed through the lens of six agrifood systems categories to take into account various outcomes and hidden costs that require different policy interventions. Case studies offering in-depth assessments of country, local and value chain contexts illustrate the economic, social and environmental impacts of current practices to guide policy interventions. Crucial to all contexts is the need for inclusive stakeholder consultations to inform interventions and reconcile power imbalances and trade-offs.

Annotated reference list of training documents on Farmer Field Schools on forestry and agroforestry
A toolbox for master trainers and facilitators

By Kessler, K.; Phillips, S.; Diaz Diaz, J.V.; Ed. FAO, 2025
This annotated reference list is the direct result of the identified need and key recommendations of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) stocktaking study of Farmer Field Schools (FFS).The stocktaking study was applied to forestry to update technical resources, identify discovery-learning activities and document and share lessons and FFS curricula on forestry and agroforestry. The study confirmed the potential of FFS to support capacity building and the empowerment of rural people in the use of forests and trees. It showed that FFS can support diversification of production and can improve livelihoods while contributing to the mitigation of climate change and the restoration of the ecosystem. The annotated reference list contains a compilation of training materials, guides and curricula that apply the FFS approach to achieve advanced capacity building in forestry and agroforestry. Additional training documents that have been included do not apply all FFS principles, but apply the key components of its human-centred, participatory learning approach. This compilation provides an overview of 31 selected training materials in English, French and Spanish. These materials were published by FAO, international government and non-governmental organizations and partners. Experiences across Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean, and 14 different countries were included as examples. Topics comprise natural resource management, community forestry, woodlot development, agrobiodiversity, forest management, trees outside forests, forest gardens, nurseries, cocoa, integrated farm management and enterprise development.
