Technical Visit Report
Abstract

This report presents the environmental and geomorphological context of the sites visited during the post-conference technical field trips and provides a detailed characterization of two urban soils surveyed, described, and discussed as part of the SUITMA post-conference activities organized by the National Research Council (CNR) in Calci (Pisa Province) and Prato. Soil morphological features, site conditions, and land-use history are presented in relation to their urban and peri-urban contexts, with particular reference to soil functionality and management challenges.
The report further summarizes two experimental case studies presented during the field trip: (i) a vineyard-based study conducted in Calci by CNR and (ii) an intervention implemented in a de-sealed urban area in Prato. The latter project was developed by the University of Florence and is discussed in terms of soil restoration strategies and ecosystem service enhancement within urban environments.
Additionally, within the framework of the 13th SUITMA Conference held in Pisa, the Art and Soil workshop, coordinated by Gerd Wessolek, took place at the Cittadella Galileiana. The workshop involved sixteen soil scientists in an interdisciplinary activity integrating soil materials and artistic media to interpret SUITMA-related themes. The resulting artworks were exhibited during the conference, promoting interaction between scientific knowledge and creative practice.
