Commission 4.2. Soils, food security, and human health

Mission


The mission of Commission 4.2 is to promote research and education on the role of soils in sustaining the world's food and environmental security and human health. Soil function is intimately tied to food security and human health. Society is sustained generation after generation only if the soils remain productive. Integration of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils with land management will lead to sustainability. Thus, providing science-based information to policy makers will help decision makers to develop policies that sustain soil, food production and human health.

Objectives


To better understand and quantify the role of soil function, chemical physical and biological, on food security and human health and to promote the supporting research needs.
 

To promote the integration of sub disciplines of soil science within and among the other sciences through scientific exchange in order to enhance to role soils contribute to food security and human health.
 

To develop science-based information to be delivered to the general public and policy makers on soil's role in food security, the environment, and human health.
