Symposium "Function
of soils for human societies and the environment"
at the 32nd International Geological Congress in Florence (Italy)
The division 4 of the
International Union of Soil Science (E Frossard, U Wolf, B
Warkentin, W. Blum) is organizing within the next
International Geological Congress in Florence (Italy) from
the 20th to the 28th of August 2004, a half-day symposium
entitled "Function of soils for human societies and the
environment". The aim of this session is to discuss
with geologists the importance of soil, which as the
interface between the geological parent material the
atmosphere and the anthroposphere supports the primary
production in terrestrial ecosystems, acts as a source or a
sink for pollutants, is an important reservoir of genes and
is the physical ground for many human activities. This
symposium will also cover historical aspects as earth
science and soil science share a common past and many
paleontological and archaeological assets are conserved in
soils. Finally some policies being implemented to promote a
sustainable of soil use will be presented.
You are warmly invited to
submit abstract for poster presentations to this symposium.
It is planned to publish the best poster contributions as
articles in a peer reviewed book of the Geological Society.
Deadline for abstract
submission is the 10th of January 2004.
