Antonio Violante

Prof. Dr. Antonio Violante is Professor of Soil Chemistry at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. He received his academic degree in Chemistry at the University of Naples. He spent sabbatical years at the University of Wisconsin, USA (1976-1977) and was invited as visiting professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada (1981-1982, 1985, 1992). He was Head of the Dipartimento di Scienze Chimico-Agrarie from 1994 to 1999 and is Coordinator of the Doctoral School in Agrobiology and Agrochemistry. Dr. Violante taught courses in Agricultural Chemistry, Soil Chemistry, and Soil Fertility for undergraduate students and in Environmental Biogeochemisty for Ph.D students. He has successfully trained many M.S. and Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows and received visiting scientists worldwide. Three of his students received awards for their theses in Soil Chemistry. The areas of his research include the formation mechanisms of Al-hydroxides and oxyhydroxides, the surface chemistry and reactivities of short-range ordered precipitation products of Al and Fe, the influence of biomolecules on the sorption/desorption of nutrients and xenobiotics on/from variable charge minerals and soils, the factors which influence the sorption and residual activity of enzymes on soil components and the chemistry of arsenic in soil environments. He was the scientific chairman and chief organizer of International and National Congresses. Dr. A. Violante is the author or co-author of 167 refereed research articles and book chapters and invited reviews, and co-edited six books. He is Fellow of Soil Science Society of America and American Society of Agronomy.
